# Morrowdorn

*The Imperial Magus of Nestor, Architect of Catastrophe, True Master of the Dark*

#### Overview
Morrowdorn is one of the most powerful and influential mages alive in Sentretta. Known across nations, temples, and empires, his name is spoken with a mixture of awe, fear, and reluctant respect. He is closely associated with world‑shaping events, forbidden magic, and decisions that alter the balance of power on a continental scale.

#### Role in the World
Morrowdorn occupies a singular position at the intersection of **arcane mastery**, **imperial politics**, and **cosmic forces**. He serves as the chief magical authority of the Nestorian Empire while simultaneously engaging with powers far beyond mortal institutions.

He is widely believed to act with long‑term objectives in mind that rarely align with simple good or evil.

#### Allegiances
- **The Nestorian Empire** (Imperial Magus)
- The **Imperial Council**
- Select planar and arcane interests (details unknown)

Morrowdorn is known to cooperate with gods, ascendants, and rival powers when it suits greater goals.

#### Public Reputation
Public opinion on Morrowdorn varies widely:
- Among scholars and battlemages, he is regarded as a once‑in‑a‑generation genius.
- Among common folk, he is feared as a harbinger of disaster.
- Among rulers, he is treated cautiously, often as an equal rather than a subject.

It is commonly said that *where Morrowdorn involves himself, history follows*.

#### Known Abilities
While precise details are unknown, Morrowdorn is widely believed to:
- Command multiple schools of advanced magic
- Interact directly with planar forces and Warrens
- Counter or dismantle spells cast by other archmages
- Survive encounters that would kill ordinary mortals

Accounts of his power are consistent enough that exaggeration is considered unlikely.

#### Known History
Much of modern Sentretta’s history intersects with Morrowdorn’s actions. He has been involved in:
- Imperial reforms and expansions
- Conflicts involving undead and ascendant threats
- The recovery and study of ancient artifacts
- High‑risk interventions where failure would have meant world‑scale catastrophe

Despite this, he avoids public attention except when absolutely necessary.

#### Personality & Demeanor
Those who have met Morrowdorn describe him as:
- Calm, deliberate, and difficult to provoke
- Polite, but emotionally distant
- Disarmingly candid when it serves his goals

He is known to allow others to underestimate him - usually to their regret.

#### Relationship with Adventurers
Morrowdorn makes use of adventurers more often than most rulers, seeing them as uniquely capable of navigating chaos, uncertainty, and moral ambiguity.

However:
- He expects competence
- He does not tolerate dishonesty
- Rewards tend to be proportional to risk, not comfort

Those who work with him often find themselves involved in events far larger than initially expected.

#### Rumours & Stories
- Some claim Morrowdorn has died more than once.
- Others believe he is slowly becoming something no longer fully mortal.
- A persistent rumour suggests that several divine beings view him as a long‑term problem rather than an ally.
- More than one nation quietly credits him with preventing disasters they never officially acknowledged.

Whether these stories are true remains unclear.

# High Mages of Nestor

A High Mage is a spellcaster—typically a wizard—who stands head and shoulders above others in their respective fields, or who serves as a pillar of the Empire’s political or defensive power. Despite their importance, holding the title of High Mage requires an exceptional level of talent. This is not a rank granted lightly or commonly.

Below are some of the most prolific High Mages of the Empire. It is worth noting that the Crown has never released an official list of High Mages, due to the dangers inherent in making such information public.

**Imperial Magus, High Mage of Darkness**

[Morrowdorn ](https://nestorlore.lapthorne.com.au:8085/books/npcs/page/morrowdorn "Morrowdorn")has long been regarded as one of—if not the—true power behind the throne of Nestor. Having lived in the city for several centuries and played a role in nearly every major political and military crisis during that time, he has risen to an unparalleled position of influence.

His name is whispered rather than spoken, either in awe by Nestorians or in fear by their enemies. On the battlefield, his presence alone has ended hostilities more than once.

Formerly the Captain of the Battlemages, Morrowdorn stepped down after his vitality was stolen by a curse enacted by Nerdizer and several Lich Lords. Despite this, he continues to play a vital role in training new battlemagi.

</div>## Tolarian

**High Mage of Ice, Commander of the Mage Cadre**

Tolarian is a tall human of advanced age, with long silver hair and a neatly trimmed beard. He wields a gnarled staff in one hand and a war-wand in the other, embodying the archetype of a wizard at first glance.

As the current head of the Mage Cadre, Tolarian oversees the deployment and readiness of the Empire’s mages, ensuring they are prepared to respond to crises of both spiritual and physical nature. A long-serving mage of nearly eighty years, he is among the most senior still active, surpassed only by Seviok and Morrowdorn.

Having seen more combat than nearly any other mage in the Empire, Tolarian is considered a premier battle wizard and is not to be underestimated. Though generally jovial, he remains calm and composed during crises, providing stability and guidance to those around him.

**Notable Actions:**

</div>## Seviok

**High Mage of Flame**

Seviok is a dwarf of mountain heritage, likely of Dwimmer blood, born and raised in the poorest districts of Nestor. Orphaned young, he endured the harshest realities of city life before the age of twenty. He was sold to a wizard as a servant—though he insists he was sold as demon food—and survived long enough to absorb the basics of arcane practice.

His former master was killed when he attempted to summon two Daemons of Light to murder a rising rival mage newly arrived in the city. That rival, a young Morrowdorn, convinced the daemons to turn on their summoner instead. Seviok was badly scarred in the resulting magical inferno.

Impressed by Morrowdorn’s power and cunning, Seviok sought him out and became his apprentice. Under Morrowdorn’s tutelage, Seviok learned both the arcane arts and the political realities of power. Together, they helped shape the backbone of the Mage Cadre, recruiting and training talent and encouraging some to become battlemagi.

By the end of the Guthlafellian War, Seviok had stepped fully into leadership on the battlefield. Alongside Tolarian, he became one half of a feared arcane pairing rivaling even the High Mage of Darkness himself. In 1103 NR, after routing three Walushii raiding tribes despite their escort of guards fleeing the field, both Seviok and Tolarian were formally granted the title of High Mage.

Seviok is a devoted believer in the Flames of Kellok and regularly aids smaller sects of the faith, ensuring their protection until they become self-sustaining. As part of this service, he also keeps a watchful eye on would-be arsonists, occasionally redirecting their talents toward more productive ends.

**Notable Actions:**

</div>## Aldar the Quick

**High Mage of Air, Captain of the Battlemages**

Aldar the Quick is the current Captain of the Battlemages and the High Mage of Air, a position that places him at the sharpest edge of Nestor’s military might. Where Morrowdorn embodies inevitability and Seviok devastation, Aldar represents speed, precision, and adaptability.

True to his epithet, Aldar is renowned for his extraordinary mobility on the battlefield. Whether through mastery of wind magic, enhanced reflexes, or a preternatural sense of timing, Aldar is almost never where his enemies expect him to be. Stories of battles involving Aldar often describe him appearing in multiple places at once - striking, repositioning, and vanishing before retaliation can be mounted.

As Captain of the Battlemages, Aldar is responsible for the tactical deployment, training doctrine, and battlefield coordination of the Empire’s arcane strike forces. He emphasizes flexibility over brute force, drilling his battlemagi to respond dynamically to changing conditions rather than relying on rigid spell rotations or formations. This philosophy has led to a dramatic reduction in battlemage casualties during prolonged engagements.

Like all many High Mages, Aldar rose through the ranks almost entirely through battlefield merit rather than political maneuvering. While he is capable of navigating court politics when required, he prefers the clarity of command and the honesty of combat. Among the rank-and-file battlemagi, Aldar is widely respected—not feared—as a leader who understands their risks and refuses to squander lives needlessly.

Aldar maintains a professional but respectful relationship with Morrowdorn, viewing him as both a mentor and a strategic backstop, while his working partnership with Seviok and Tolarian forms the operational core of the Empire’s magical warfare doctrine. Together, these four High Mages represent a balance of Darkness, Flame, Ice, and Air that few forces on the continent could hope to challenge directly. And Verd is always waiting in the shadows to surprise those who do.

In person, Aldar is lean, sharp-eyed, and perpetually in motion. Even at rest, he appears coiled with potential energy, fingers tapping or cloak shifting in unseen currents. His speech is concise and deliberate, and he is known to end discussions abruptly once a decision has been made, trusting execution over debate.

To the enemies of Nestor, Aldar the Quick is a warning: that the Empire does not merely endure or overwhelm - but strikes first, strikes fast, and does not give its foes time to recover.

# Duke Silvaro of Nestor

#### The Silver Duke

Kethanial Silvaro, Lord Duke of Nestor, is widely regarded as the most powerful mortal in the city, second only if one dares to count Morrowdorn among the ranks of men.

To the people of Nestor, however, titles matter less than reputation, and by that measure Silvaro is known by a single name spoken with equal parts pride and respect: **the Silver Duke**.

The epithet is drawn both from his lineage and from his most famous decree: the levy of a single silver piece on the wholesale trade of seafood throughout Nestor and its holdings, a tax imposed not for vanity or indulgence, but to lay the financial bedrock of the Legions. Fate, it seems, took notice. At the age of thirty‑six, Silvaro’s hair began to pale, strand by strand, until it took on the sheen of worked silver. He now wears a long, metallic mane, unmistakable and iconic, as though the city itself had marked him as its own.

Unlike many rulers of the region, Duke Silvaro is known as a genuinely attentive and compassionate lord. He walks among his people, listens to grievances, and does not hesitate to publicly chastise or shame fellow nobles who neglect or abuse their subjects. Such candor has earned him both admiration and enemies. In recent years, he has clashed repeatedly with the Duke of the Eastern Marches over the harsh treatment of several accused lords. The dispute remains unresolved, a quiet fault line in regional politics.

Silvaro is credited with steering Nestor through one of the most dramatic economic transformations in its history. Rejecting crushing taxation in favor of long‑term growth, he enacted policies that favored trade, investment, and enterprise. Businesses flourished, profits grew, and the city’s wealth expanded organically. Yet this “long game” nearly broke him. In 1131 NR, a prolonged drought combined with depleted reserves pushed Nestor to the brink of bankruptcy. The Nestorian Guard went on strike, riots flared in the streets, and the Duke learned, publicly and painfully, that vision without contingency can be as dangerous as tyranny.

The crisis was only resolved when Silvaro swallowed his pride and borrowed nearly forty thousand gold pieces from a wizard ally who had recently “inherited” the hoard of the Blue Dragon Cragos. The city survived. The Duke endured. And Nestor learned.

In the present day, Kethanial Silvaro is deeply loved. The city has never again fallen into such dire straits, and its prosperity stands as quiet testimony to his resolve. The Duke is a familiar presence in the city’s dining halls and taverns, and it is considered a mark of great prestige for a restaurateur to count him as a regular patron. He is known to be a passionate supporter of the performing arts and keeps a court bard in his service.

Whispers persist, usually late at night and over too much wine, that the Silver Duke himself can play the lute, and very well. The Duke neither confirms nor denies these rumors. Some legends, after all, are best left untested.
